One of the best sources of wooden floorboards is Matai wood. This iconic New Zealand timber works to a beautiful satiny finish and weathers well. It is also durable making it a great choice for flooring, weatherboards. window sills, and doors.
Matai trees are widely distributed all over New Zealand. It is one of the 15 podocarp tree species belonging to the coniferous families. Matai trees seem to favour warm areas with moist soil, that’s why it is commonly found in the Central Plateau in the North Island, the West Coast, SE Nelson, the Seaward Kaikoura’s and western Southland in the South Island.
These trees can grow up to 25 metres and up to 1.3 metres in diameter. The largest trees ever recorded is 23 metres high and has a diameter of 2.35 metres. It was also said to be over a thousand years old.
Matai trees take time to grow. One of the fastest annual growth recorded is 1mm. Despite its slow growth, this tree is durable and high in extractives, which when polished gives the wood a glossy appearance. Due to its extractive components, it can be difficult to cost and stain. Extreme care and patience are required in order to coat a matai wood.
The tree trunk has a bluish-grey hue on the upper part, and the base takes on a purplish-brown colour. When the bark is peeled, it reveals a bright red inner bark. When cut, the timber reveals a golden yellow colour which darkens to a red-brown hue when exposed to sunlight. It also produces a sap which the early Maori’s collect and call matai beer.
